This year’s event was the first of its kind, with the theme “Innovation and Design to Strengthen Democracy”.

The event was attended by Ion Muñoa (Secretary General for Communication and Social Innovation, Lehendakaritza, Basque Government) and the Director General of Arantzazulab, Naiara Goia. Ion Muñoa stressed the need to strengthen democratic culture in order to demonstrate the link between progress as a country and the development of democracy. Naiara Goia recalled the four years of experience at Arantzazulab and highlighted the combination of theory and practice in the generation of knowledge.

The conference was followed by the participation of several international experts. On the one hand, Nicole Curato, from the University of Canberra, posed the challenge of promoting deliberative democracy in the techno-feudal times in which we live, calling for spaces for political dialogue without losing the vision of the global majority.

Later, Lucy Kimbell, from the University of the Arts, London, pointed to the potential of design in democratic innovation: design can help mediate between what is and what could be, and this is particularly important in democratic challenges.

At the end of the afternoon session, Jayne Engle (Dark Matter Labs), Xabier Barandiaran (University of Deusto) and Miren Larrea (Orkestra) took part in a round table discussion chaired by Ione Ardaiz, director of the Arantzazulab Project for Innovation in Democracy. Xabier Barandiaran identified two major challenges: the empowerment of the political community and the articulation of new systems of interaction to deal with complexity. On the other hand, Miren Larrea highlighted the value of the open and dynamic methodology based on the practice of Arantzazulab. Finally, Jane Engle highlighted Arantzazulab’s contribution from an international perspective, through its work in developing the links it promotes between different ecosystems and its contribution to collective intelligence in this field.

The first day thus ended in more pleasant weather than at the beginning, with a desire to explore the subject in greater depth. There will be plenty of opportunity to do so over the next two days.

This Thursday, 10 October, the conference will focus on the interaction between digital technologies and innovation in democracy in Arantzazu. It will also look at research into collaborative governance and co-creation ecosystems for democratic innovation.

This Wednesday afternoon, in a stormy atmosphere, the Conference on Innovation in Democracy organised by Arantzazulab began at the Euskalduna Palace in Bilbao.
