When individuals do not embrace shared responsibilities, they reduce themselves to mere consumers and subjects. It is essential to move away from reliance on representation and instead foster true agency through shared responsibility. Direct participation enables people to address their specific local needs. Practical examples like &#8220;Permissioning the City&#8221; and &#8220;Living Stewardship Agreement&#8221; developed by Dark Matter Labs can help foster this transition, giving people true agency in shaping the future.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The impact of the 2014 Sunflower Movement in Taiwan marked a significant moment in digital democracy. It led to increased awareness of shared responsibility and the capability to address societal needs collaboratively.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Examples of citizen-led innovations &#8211; \u201ce-mask maps and platforms\u201d: During the COVID-19 pandemic that was initiated by various civic tech \u201cwhite hat hackers\u201d who were able to act quicker than the centralized government machine in fulfilling people\u2019s various needs by building a wide range of civic tech public services, including allowing people to get easier and quicker access to face masks by providing real-time data on stocks at pharmacy locations to facilitate their distribution, while providing tailored approaches for those with special needs, e.g., visual or mobility impairment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The use of digital tools like pol.is to identify common ground among divisive groups and support large-scale deliberative democracy processes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creating and holding different physical spaces for information and emotions in deliberative processes, along with implementing accountability mechanisms such as having an \u201caccount of policymaking.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The &#8220;demos&#8221; include more than just humans. We need to recognize the voiceless members of our ecosystem. Drawing on Indigenous worldviews that see ecosystems are not merely resources, but relational systems for which we are responsible. Furthermore, the idea of &#8220;augmented collective intelligence,&#8221; emphasizes the necessity for collaboration between humans and machines, illustrating the expansion of \u201cdemos\u201d to include this relationship.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ecosystems contain technologies far older than humans, such as photosynthesis in plants, which we often fail to recognize as technology.
